Today we’re diving into the Android pool with our new Android app! And we can already hear the collective “its about damn time” scream from our very vocal and passionate android fans! You can download the android app for free at Google Play here.

This is a v1 release and its only been tested on a couple of devices so there are likely gonna be bugs and issues with the app. There’s only so much we can do with such a small and nimble (but awesome) dev team! Rest assured we will keep a close look at the bug reports and squish them as quickly as possible.

As excited as we are with this announcement today, we’re even more chuffed about the upcoming version 2 of the app in the summer. Version 2 of our iOS and Android apps will be a complete top-to-bottom overhaul with a completely new UI, all-new features like on-demand streams, subscription access and much, much more!

Since January we’ve been testing our new website with a small group of private beta testers and starting today, we’re excited to start rolling it out for everyone.

The new FRISKY is not just a facelift or a visit to the plastic surgeon, its a complete re-think of what an electronic music radio service should be. Whilst we’ve yet to release the majority of our ground-breaking and industry-first feature-set, we’re extremely proud of our first public beta release today. Some of the major features we are launching today are:

On-Demand streaming
- Listen to any DJ set, on-demand, whenever you like… FOR FREE. Registered members get a generous number of free streams a month, with our premium subscribers getting unlimited streams. And coming soon: an unlimited streaming-only subscription tier for our fans that only want to stream their music from the cloud, with no hassle of having to download tons of files.

Some new features, at a glance
While the new FRISKY has a ton of new features, I’d like to highlight some below:
- The new home page is a snapshot connecting you to the music you love in ways never before, with featured show area that highlights some sets we think you should check out. The Show Schedule lists the day’s shows, with easy access different days’ schedule.
- Latest Mixes lists is an easy way to catch up with the very latest dj sets just aired on the radio. Just chose which mix want to listen to and press play!
- Trending Mixes section calculates what mixes are most popular right now based on many different factors.
- Timezones. One of our most-requested feature ever is the ability to display show times in your timezone. You can now view show times in your own time zone! You can change your timezone in settings.
- Charts. A weekly Top 10 chart of the top shows of the previous week.

A better way to search
When you have access to millions of hours of music, searching for what you’re looking for can be a challenge. With our new search, you can search for music by show name, DJ/artist name and date. Want to know what was played on a particular date? Just search for it by date. Or, for a list of all shows played in a particular month, you can search by month.

In the coming months we will be spending significant focus on discovery: our mission is to connect you to the music you love now, and introduce you to your future favorite DJs and shows!

New chill channel
- Previously available only on our award-winning iPhone app, you can now tune into the CHILL stream for the best in ambient, lounge, movie scores and downbeat. Having a dedicated CHILL channel will open up for more programming on sundays, which was previously held by Chillout Sundays, our weekly chillout show.

So, Dec 21 2012 came and the world didn’t end. That means we now have to plan for the future…damn you MAYANS!!! Luckily we were prepared in the 0.00004% chance that the Mayans were wrong in their prediction and had put some things in motion to prepare for such a Zombie-free utopian future that we’re all going to enjoy in 2013.

But first, lets take a look back at 2012. 2012 was even bigger than 2011. We increased our TTSL (Total Time Spent Listening, which is an industry standard for measuring online radio) to 9 million hours. Our website, which admittedly is lacking in content, still managed to see an increase of 2 million new unique visits than the previous year. We went mobile with the launch of an official FRISKY iOS app, and it got featured by Apple and became the most downloaded music app for that week! We launched a new channel featuring content from our popular Chillout Sundays programming. We added new shows from artists that we feel are pushing boundaries and are on the top of their game, producing the best electronic music anywhere!

Now, on to 2013. We’ve been busy developing a number of products that we’ll release this year. Starting with a website redesign, which is currently in private beta at beta.friskyradio.com. We are slowly letting more users in so if you’d like to check it out, sign up to get in the queue to gain access. Due to the response we’ve already got, it might take a while before we can let more people in, so please be patient.

The website redesign is just one small part of what we are calling the #theNewFRISKY. Its not simply a redesign, but a platform on top of which new features and products will be built. Coming soon: the FRISKY web-app with features like smart playlists, recommendations based on what artists and shows you like, social radio features and more discovery. We plan to update our popular iOS app, and yes Android users we heard you loud and clear - FRISKY for Android is coming soon!

For our artists: better ways to connect with their audience, showcase their body of work, ability to sell their latest releases as well as benefit directly from their dj sets is also in the works. We’re pretty excited about all the upcoming features and have a few surprises up our sleeves and we cant wait to show them to you!

On the content side we’ll continue with our belief that quality trumps quantity. We think curation is the key to our growth - which translates to more exposure for our artists and their work. Our audience comes to FRISKY because they expect quality and exclusive electronic music. We plan to double down on this core philosophy and feature the best electronic dance music from the world’s top and most upcoming DJs. So look out for announcements of new shows in the coming days.

FRISKY has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2001. We are heard in over 204 regions across the world. It doesnt matter if you don’t do it first - you just have to do it *right*. That’s why we resisted the urge to release an iOS app just for the sake of having one. So after careful planning and figuring out what exactly is important in a mobile app - we’re launching our first mobile app within the next few weeks.

So after waiting years for a mobile app… er, you just have to wait a tiny bit more as the app will out in the App Store in a few weeks. And this is only the beginning. We have a pretty busy roadmap for the app and FRISKY in general for the rest of 2012 and we can’t wait to show you all the things we’ve been planning for the last year. In fact, we’ve already begun working on version 1.2 of the iOS app! Back when I posted some stats of how FRISKY did in 2011 I promised that we will also post some more insight into our top performing shows 2011. I realise its been a while and its almost March already but we have a good excuse. We’ve been huddled up in our caves working on some exciting new stuff for you that’s launching this year… So watch this space.

Well, without further ado…Here are the Top 20 shows of 2011, presented in the form of the ever popular infographic!

2011 was a milestone year for FRISKY. It marked our 10-Year Anniversary and was our biggest year yet in terms of shows, listeners and reach. Stats on our website and the actual radio stream tend to be very different as most of our audience goes directly to the audio stream by ways of links from other sites, bookmarks etc. But lets look at some stats about you, the listener:

Overall, you came from 194 different regions from across the globe. The Top 5 countries are:
1. United States
2. Germany
3. Greece
4. Hungary
5. Russia

We even had visits from far away places like Fiji, Bhutan, even Greenland!

From inside the USA, the majority of you came from California. This isnt surprising as FRISKY was founded in San Francisco one fine morning (or night, we cant remember) in May 2001. So it remains strong in San Francisco and indeed California. Rounding up the Top 5 states in the US are:

2. New York
3. Florida
4. Texas
5. Illinois

As for cities, our top visitors came from the following cities:
1. Athens
2. Budapest
3. Moscow
4. Istanbul
5. Buenos Aires

Our TTSL, or Total Time Spent Listening, in 2011 totaled 2,665,989. That means that in 2011, you spent over of 2.6 million hours listening to FRISKY. Thats more than 306 years in total. We’d say thats time well spent!

So there you have it. Thats you, the FRISKY fan and listener, in 2011. We cant thank you enough for investing so much of your time and energy with us! We hope to continue to improve in 2012! More on that later.
